The yellow scorpion is an animal belonging to the family Buthidae; characterized by being the scorpions with the most potent venom. Characteristics of the Yellow Scorpion

This scorpion is characterized by its yellow color, as its name suggests. However, on the back, there are some gray stripes, which end at the beginning of the tail, where the yellowish color follows. Its tail ends with a deadly stinger, which possesses a lethal poison that paralyzes its prey.

The yellow scorpion has eight legs and two thin claws. And they measure from 8 to 15 cm long, with an approximate weight of 2.5 gr. Their skin being of this color is a perfect camouflage to hunt or hide from their predators.

Natural habitat of the Scorpion

These animals are native to the desert, perfectly adapted to high temperatures, thanks to the layers of fat that keep them fresh. They live most of the time under the rocks cooling down, and at night they become active. One place where it is widespread to find them is in the Sahara desert.

They can also live in burrows built by other animals, but they can even live in human homes.

Scorpion Diet

Yellow scorpions are insectivorous, feeding on insects, worms, centipedes, and arthropods such as spiders and other scorpions. They are nocturnal animals, in the middle of the day they hide because of the heat; at night they go out to hunt.

To hunt, they use sensors placed on their legs in the shape of hairs, thus detecting the vibrations caused by the animals that approach it. They are kept waiting in rocks, trunks, or shrubs, and then use the surprise factor; and with their sting, which has a potent poison, paralyze their prey. They also use their tweezers to squeeze their victims and keep them captive without being able to move.

Reproduction

As is common among scorpions, the yellow scorpions when mating dance with them as a courtship; they are taken from the pedipalps, or what we know as the tweezers, and move in several directions with much coordination. This takes only a few minutes.

There are occasions when the female has a struggle so that it may seem like a very wild courtship. However, the male calms it with small doses of poison on the pedipalps, which works as a natural tranquilizer although it is not always necessary to resort to that, after a while, both coordinate.

Then comes fertilization, which is unusual. The male deposits his spermatophore in the soil, and then he guides the female to position herself on top of them so that she absorbs them in her genital operculum and fertilization takes place. This asexual process is known as parthenogenesis.

However, this process is delicate, since if the male takes too long to do his part, the female will show disinterest; besides that, it will also depend on the success of the courtship.

Predators

Scorpions are predators by nature, but they also pose many threats. These animals exhibit cannibalistic behaviors, so one of their large predators is other yellow scorpions. They are also victims of eagles, falcons, suricates, lizards, and even centipedes.

Relevant information

The venom of the yellow scorpion and the other scorpions contain neurotoxins, which have severe consequences on the cardiovascular and respiratory systems. It can hit vulnerable people, such as children or the sick, harder. In spite of this, in a healthy adult, the poison does not go beyond causing much pain, although medical attention is necessary.

However, not everything is terrible when it comes to poison. Like the poisons of other animals such as certain snakes, many scientists have detected that scorpion venom has the potential to attack carcinogenic tumors, thanks to the chlorotoxin it contains.
